Delivering huge performance and energy savings from a small footprint

Residents at 10 Berkeley Street, located at the heart of Mayfair in the West End of London, are benefitting from 33% energy savings, thanks to two powerful THISION® L PLUS 200kW wall-hung boilers from ELCO. The Berkeley Street property contains 19 high-end residential apartments, each utilising the boilers for their heating and hot water requirements.

The building was previously heated by two Regency boilers that had been installed under the MHS Boilers name. Aaron Housen, of commercial heating specialists Dunamis Heating & Mechanical Services, was asked to service these ageing boilers by the owner of the property – prior to then being approached to replace the products with a more efficient system.

Commenting on the project, Aaron explained: “The plant room at Berkeley Street is very compact – there isn’t much space in there. So, when the owner came to us looking for an alternative, we had to look at designing a new system, considering what products we could use to maximise the space without compromising energy efficiency.”

He continued: “The 19 apartments needed to have a continuation of their heating and hot water services, so we chose the THISION® L PLUS from ELCO. Having the ability to squeeze almost 200kW onto the wall – given the space constraints – was a key factor in selecting the units for this project.”

The two new boilers were fitted in cascade and installed over a three-week period, which included the time taken to lay the foundations for the switchovers to temporary plant while the renovation work took place. Site time was kept to a minimum, thanks to the THISION® L PLUS having the circulation pump, as well as the associated non-return valves for heating water and the flue included as standard.

The wall-hung boilers are suitable for tight plant rooms – such as the one found at Berkeley Street – as units only require 10mm between them when fitted in a modular arrangement. With the 200kW models measuring less than 700mm wide, they have an exceptionally compact 3.9m x 1.4m footprint. These products also have the added benefit of dual stainless steel heat exchanger technology; these work independently from one another, so boast built-in redundancy in the event of any issues arising.

From an installation perspective, Aaron enthused: “As an engineer, the THISION® L PLUS is a pleasure to fit and work on. The cascade frame allows for very quick installation, while the accessories available offer many different configurations of system. Plus, the level of service and support provided by ELCO is equally impressive; for this particular project, I carried out the initial survey visit with the ELCO area sales manager, so we could consider the most suitable product for the site, as well as tailor the equipment accordingly. This personal approach was much better than simply looking at a brochure!”

Finally, from an energy saving perspective, Aaron described how the THISION® L PLUS once again exceeded expectations, concluding: “According to the owner of Berkeley Street, the boilers have resulted in a one third reduction of the gas consumption which, given the current economic climate, he’s very happy about! As for the boilers themselves, I’ve recommended them on many projects since, because of the level of trust I have in the products.”

The THISION® L PLUS is the most powerful wall-hung boiler on the UK market, capable of achieving outputs as high as 200kW in a footprint of less than 0.5m2. When fitted in cascade, models boast an impressive output of up to 1.6MW and have a low installation height of just 1.7m (excluding flue). They also offer the smallest, most compact footprint (in terms of width). Up to eight boilers can be fitted in cascade, either in-line or back-to-back.
