Essex barn conversion receives a heat pump makeover

When the owners of a five-bedroom Essex barn conversion wanted to replace an ageing oil boiler, they turned to Modutherm and its efficient and highly sustainable Alira air source heat pump.

Modutherm provided a solution for an Essex barn conversion

Completed in February 2022, the RHI-compliant installation highlights the extreme flexibility and adaptability of the Alira range and how the latest heat pump technology can be effectively utilised in larger properties. Furthermore, thanks to the use of R290 natural refrigerant within the Alira unit, the heat pump is CO2neutral – eliminating any damage to the ozone layer.

Central to the installation was the need to maintain comfortable room temperatures all year round by utilising the existing underfloor heating and radiator circuits in the 3200 sq.ft property. The 8.5kW heat pump was easily connected to the existing 4-zone manifold, delivering a flow temperature of 45°C to the underfloor circuits and oversized radiators. Each zone is thermostatically controlled, allowing the entire home to be maintained at a comfortable temperature.

For the property’s DHW requirements, the owners opted to install a new 300 litre Juniper XL stainless steel heat pump-ready cylinder, alongside Modutherm’s wall mounted Hydraulic Module. Compatible with a wide range of cylinders, the Module contains all the heating system components for simple servicing and maintenance, while its compact dimensions allowed it to be installed neatly into the existing ground floor airing cupboard.

Choosing a location for the Alira heat pump was also made simple due to its incredibly low sound pressure levels of just 45dB(A). Combined with a ‘Silent Mode’ for even quieter operation at night, this allowed the unit to be easily sited beneath a bedroom window without any concern.

Commenting on the installation, the property owner said: “We have been really impressed with the new heat pump and how easy it was to install. The system has been working efficiently, even during some cold winter snaps, so we’re confident it will be far more cost-effective to run throughout the year. It’s certainly been worth the investment, especially with the RHI available to support the installation costs.

“We’ve also been impressed by the Alpha Control mobile app and how it allows us to easily control both the heating and hot water, which again helps us to maximise energy savings.”

The Alira outdoor natural air source heat pump is highly efficient, quiet and available in a range of 4 models from 7.1kW - 10.1kW with COPs up to 6.0. Using the air as the source of energy, the Alira utilises advanced technology to provide sustainable heating and hot water; a natural refrigerant is also used, which allows the Alira Outdoor Natural to be CO2 neutral. The Alira can be cascaded for larger projects.

The Juniper SS XL hot water calorifier is available as either a single coil or twin coil, both of which utilise double spiral stainless steel construction. The calorifier is suitable for use with traditional LPHW heating systems and are ideally suited for heat pump systems providing a continuous output up to 3,159 L/h. Capacities range from 200 to 1,000 litres.
