Penthouse apartments look to LG for heating and air conditioning excellence

Barons Keep in Barons Court, West London is a 1930’s Art Deco apartment development that has seen high levels of refurbishment in recent years as the area has grown in attraction for Londoners and overseas property buyers looking for top of the range accommodation. It’s an area that lost its appeal in the second half of the twentieth century but has been seen as a cost-effective area to buy in, as property values head back up in secondary areas of the capital.

What were large but fairly basic apartments have seen the addition of luxury fixtures and fittings, especially in the top floor penthouse properties, including large roof lights to make them lighter and brighter throughout, and high-quality air conditioning and heating to make them perfect homes all year round. Add a roof garden for parties and barbeques when the London weather permits, private lift access from the ground floor and you have the privacy, the space and the luxury to enjoy a very special apartment in an increasingly desirable area of London.

The consultant – Consult JA - and LG, through its distributor PACAIR, decided to specify and install a Multi V S system - a compact yet powerful Mini VRF air conditioning solution for residences and small offices that provides high performance with low operation costs. And in addition they installed a Therma V Monobloc air to water heat pump unit to each of the penthouse apartments being refurbished. The LG Therma V units are the main source of heating and hot water and the Multi V S Air Conditioning system is to be used for the cooling. It can also be used to back up the heating if needed.

The Therma V system will prioritise the hot water, so that if there is a high demand for hot water the Air Conditioning system can be called on to heat the apartment. It’s a belt and braces approach to ensure that the occupants of the apartments are never short of hot water or heating. Both systems have external and internal units – with the external units placed on the roof garden and services piped into the indoor space to hot water cylinders in the services area of the apartments.

In charge of system design and recommendation was Eric Zeline CEng, who is Specification Sales Engineer at key LG Distributor, PACAIR: “This combination of units from LG met the design brief from the consultant for the work on these apartments,” he says. “The footprint is quite small despite the size of the apartments and we needed to work hard to keep all the equipment and pipework within the framework of the apartment. We had to conform to line of sight restrictions and keep the external units below the low parapet wall on the rooftop garden area. We were able to integrate the controls to work well with multi manufacturer products and we have specified a system that offers high energy efficiency in both heating and cooling modes. And as always it was imperative that we kept noise levels down to a very low level which we were able to achieve with the LG equipment.”

Thain Gummer is National Sales Manager, Air Conditioning and Energy Solutions for LG in the UK and Ireland: “The installation went very well and we have a system in place that is a credit to everyone who worked on it. It benefits from excellent design and installation and offers a very impressive heating and air conditioning system that reflects the quality of the apartments and their surroundings. Barons Court is an up and coming location in the capital and these apartments sit well in the area. PACAIR has done them proud.”
