CIBSE has announced the winners of this year’s Young Engineers Awards.
Ryan Rodrigues (pictured) of HurleyPalmerFlatt and SDS Engineering Consultants have been awarded the coveted Graduate of the Year award and Employer of the Year award.
Ryan was crowned Graduate of the Year after facing off against eight other graduate hopefuls giving four minute presentations on the theme of collaboration, and how it can be used to improve buildings and building performance.
The Young Engineers Awards recognise excellence both in young graduates themselves, and the employers who are working to encourage young talent. The Awards seek to reward the innovative thinking, hard work and skill that is necessary to secure a bright future for the built environment.
CIBSE president Nick Mead said: “We are used to seeing the absolute cream of the UK’s engineering talent at these awards, but the standard was particularly high this year and the bar was raised yet again. Presiding over the Graduate award’s 20th anniversary year has been a great honour and meeting graduates stretching back to the first awards, now well into their careers, shows just what a powerful force we can be in encouraging the best and brightest.
“This year’s new graduate engineers will be going into a very different world from 20 years ago, and must address some of the most difficult challenges of recent times such as sustainability and climate change. As a result it is more important than ever that we support them at an early stage, to give them the best possible starts to their lives as engineers.”
This year’s Young Engineers Awards were presented at a glittering ceremony at IMechE’s headquarters in London, in which the prospective Graduate winners gave short presentations to the judging panel. This was followed by the annual ASHRAE Presidential Lecture given by the Society’s president David Underwood visiting from the USA.
The awards, which celebrate their 20th anniversary this year, is an event supported by three leading international engineering institutions – CIBSE, ASHRAE and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and is sponsored by Andrews Water Heaters, Ruskin Air Management and Schneider Electric. It is also supported by the CIBSE Patrons, a group of businesses who collaborate to give financial and technical backing to CIBSE.
