Designed by Sir Norman Foster, The National Sea Life Centre is an aquarium with over 60 displays of freshwater and marine life in Brindley Place, Birmingham. Its ocean tank has a capacity of 1,000,000 litres of water and houses giant green sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks and tropical fish. It also boasts the only fully transparent 360-degree underwater tunnel in the UK, to get any closer you’ll have to get wet!
Building services consultant, Engineering Design Partnership (London) put together a specification that incorporated replacing the existing decrepit LPHW boilers and direct gas fired hot water cylinder.
Mikrofill supplied the new schemes LPHW equipment that was installed by long standing M&E Contractor AC Engineers Ltd. It included 5No Ethos 130 kW wall-mounted condensing boilers with a total modulation of 50 > 1 and a Mikrovent 750 low loss header c/w air and dirt separator.
In addition, the HWS demand was catered for by the installation of an Extreme 300 litre loading cylinder that is designed to maximise the Ethos boilers efficiency by operating at a †T of 30°C. The WRAS approved Extreme was supplied c/w a 6-bar unvented kit and 3kW immersion heater and is capable of producing in excess of 2300 l/hr at 60°C.
