'More action needed to encourage contractors to take up BIM'

HVAC contractors are ignoring the Government's drive to get the construction trades and architects to work together on 3D models, according to Building Information Modeling (BIM) reseller Mintronics.co.uk.
The company's John Minto said: 'This is a major drive by the Government, but it needs another push. We understand that there is a severe lack of take up on the contractor side. That is appalling and needs to be addressed.'

He added: 'The Government BIM strategy was announced in May 2011, but it is largely failing as far as contractors are concerned.

'BIM systems allow perfectly integrated 3D building design and image rendering so contractors viewing architects' designs can see exactly how much pipe or wire or ducting or water pressure they may need. It means architects, builders and other contractors can work seamlessly and in real time.

'The idea is to cut costs, time and make buildings quicker and without clashes that cost so much money. We see the clashes in the 3D models before the building is built.'

Mr Minto said it felt as if the BIM movement was being strangled at birth: 'People are worried BIM systems are too complex to use. They can't afford the time or money. Expensive systems are lying idle, or are dramatically under-used. Meanwhile, less expensive systems that allow a far easier migration from traditional 2D drawing are not widely known. People need to know what's out there.'
