A century of excellence and progress
Founded in 1925 as the National Federation of Plumbers and Domestic Engineers (NFP&DE), APHC was established to provide representation and support to plumbing and heating employers. Over the past century, the association has evolved in response to industry changes and technological advancements, always maintaining its commitment to promoting high standards and professionalism.
Through key milestones such as the introduction of the Competent Persons Scheme in 2007, the launch of the WaterSafe initiative in 2013, and the annual Quality Plumber Week, APHC has continually strived to enhance the industry and provide essential resources to plumbing and heating professionals.
Supporting members through change
APHC is a not-for-profit membership organisation run by and for its members, reinvesting every penny into services and initiatives that directly benefit plumbing and heating professionals. From sole traders to large commercial contractors, members receive access to expert guidance, technical support, training opportunities, and advocacy on key industry issues.
Reflecting on the association’s journey, John Thompson, CEO of APHC, stated: “The plumbing and heating industry has undergone incredible transformations over the past 100 years. From advancements in heating technology to regulatory changes, APHC has been at the forefront, ensuring our members receive the best possible support. We are proud of our heritage and remain dedicated to shaping a strong and sustainable future for plumbing and heating professionals. Our centenary is a testament to the resilience and dedication of our members, who have continuously upheld the highest industry standards.”
Facing the future with confidence
As APHC looks to the future, it remains focused on supporting members through emerging challenges such as the transition to net-zero carbon emissions, water conservation, and evolving building regulations. By working closely with government bodies, local authorities, training organisations, and consumer protection groups, APHC is committed to ensuring that plumbing and heating contractors are well-equipped to navigate industry changes and maintain excellence in their work.
Richard L Perrins, APHC chairman highlighted: 'Running a plumbing and heating business is always challenging — not just because of the legislation changes that need to be monitored and adapted to, but also due to the administrative demands of managing employees and keeping up with government regulatory changes. It’s reassuring to know that you have support on your side in the form of the APHC, which has been there for the past 100 years to bring important updates to your attention, offer expert advice, and guide our members through the complexities of the industry.'
Throughout 2025, APHC will host a series of celebrations to mark this historic milestone.
On March 10th APHC is launching a competition in partnership with Installer to mark World Plumbing Day and their centenary with 9 prize bundles from industry suppliers to be won.
On Wednesday 25 June, as part of this year’s InstallerSHOW, APHC is taking over the InstallerPLAZA for a Centenary Celebration and Incoming President’s Event. This event will feature an interactive and engaging panel discussion with top industry experts, exploring how the next 25 years will shape the plumbing and heating sector as we progress toward 2050. After the talk, APHC will hold a special ceremony with food and drinks to celebrate 100 years of APHC and welcome our new President.
Members, industry partners, and stakeholders are invited to take part in the centenary celebrations and reflect on the progress of the plumbing and heating sector over the past century.
