Whether it is a multi-flue chimney, a fan dilution system or a generator exhaust, Schriedel Rite-Vent says it has a product to suit every commercial application. Here are some examples of the company's work from across the UK
The BBC needed to create an architectural feature to enclose the industrial flue system at its headquarters building in White City, west London.
The seven individual flues designed, manufactured and installed by Schriedel Rite-Vent were supported from a steelwork mast fixed at the top of the building. To comply with the Clean Air Act, the chimney had to terminate 48m above the ground level.
The structure was clad with perforated aluminium sheeting, which created a distinctive addition to the immediate skyline.
Schriedel Rite-Vents commercial ICS flue system was used to service three heating boilers, one generator and three further flues for future appliances.
By incorporating a platform and access ladder into the design, future maintenance can be facilitated.
World headquarters
Aesthetics were an important element of the chimney design at the Royal Bank of Scotland's new world headquarters in Edinburgh. Schriedel Rite-Vent, working with the main contractor, determined the height for the chimney terminations at a height of 8m above roof level.
The eight flues serving two pressure jet boilers, two condensing boilers and four diesel generators were then enclosed by an architect-designed windshield. As no support was available at ground level, the load had to be spread between first-floor slab and the roof.
The company produced the design calculations to take into account the support weight, flue weight and wind load and stress. Flues for a further six plant rooms at this site have been manufactured by Schriedel Rite-Vent.
Schools contract
Proving their flexibility in handling multi-site contracts, The company was awarded a multi-schools Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract by Balfour Kilpatrick on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council.
Following the completion of an initial contract for six schools as programmed, the contractor awarded the next stage of the project to the company. The ICS flue systems were individually designed and manufactured for each site.
They were installed by Schriedel to ensure that both the boiler's draught requirements and all the current environmental standards were complied with.
Being prefabricated, lightweight and space-saving, these building-supported systems are quick and easy to erect. They can be concealed internally or used as a feature externally and are easy to inspect and maintain.
ICS and ICS Plus are identical apart from a gasket, which makes the product suitable for high-pressure applications. Its push-fit system is easy to install, and saves time on site.
Schriedel Rite-Vent was chosen for the contract because of its experience on similar PFI hospital projects throughout the UK.
With government legislation aimed at improving the environment, careful consideration must be given to the sitting of any chimney termination.
When designing a flue or chimney system the company can advise on compliance with the Clean Air Act's requirements, and will give guidance on sitting and discharge heights. As a manufacturer, the company will produce all the calculations on behalf of the client ensuring performance and compliance.
Blackburn hospital
To service two existing and two new boilers in the plant room at Queens Park Hospital in Blackburn, the company's commercial design team was commissioned to design a new flue system.
To comply with the Act, a 25.2m-high free-standing chimney was constructed. The final design required smaller foundations and erection time was reduced as external scaffolding was not required.
The windshield and support arrived on site in two sections, which were assembled in a day. Crucial to the installation was making sure the hospital stayed operational, and the flues were installed in four phases to assist boiler changeover.
Broad experience
Schriedel Rite-Vent offers a full CAD design service and technical support. The company has broad experience in both in the private and public sector, whatever the scale or nature of the project; from chimneys to exhaust and venting systems.
On-site, the technical team can provide site analysis and application advice, and can design and manufacture for projects in the UK and Europe.
