Industry surfs net to safety

Installers need no longer flick through a weighty tome to read out-dated safety rules on building services maintenance- thanks to a new website.
The new site launched on November 2 by the HVCA, serves to showcase an interactive version of the SFG20- Standard Maintenance Specification for Building Services.

SFG20 is the industry bible for those tasked with maintaining, managing or specifying the maintenance of buildings. It is used as a guide to evaluate and audit standards in buildings services maintenance and is used in the tendering of maintenance contracts.

Published from 2000-07 in CD-Rom format and from 1990-2000 as five paperback books, SFG20's arrival on the net means it can be updated as soon as legislation changes and best practice methods are discovered. This means readers no longer face the safety pitfalls that come with referring to out of date copies of SFG20.

With more than 60 chapters and 500 maintenance schedules, the modern SFG20 version offers detailed maintenance schedules for key heating, cooling and ventilation solutions used in Europe.

The SFG20's site has been created by HVCA in collaboration with FM Solutions. It is available as an addition to the Concept 500 computer-aided facilities management software package offered by FM Solutions.

Peter Excel, chairman of HVCA's service and facilities group said 'Failure to maintain is costly, literally life-threatening in the case of Legionella and carbon monoxide poisoning, and there's the threat of serious litigation, increased insurance premiums and heavy fines. Businesses can protect themselves by getting it right'.

Access to SFG20 is paid for by subscription. The site is scheduled to go live this week. To view it visit www.sfg20.com
