LCL Awards' new qualifications manager & external verifier (EV), Paul Matthews
Paul is focusing his efforts on further developing LCL Awards' suite of plumbing and renewable qualifications, which includes heat pumps, solar thermal, plumbing, and low-temperature heating. Leon provides support and guidance for approved centres in London and the south-east.
Paul started his career as a gas engineer, then ran two large plumbing companies before moving into training. Over the last fourteen years he has set up two LCL Awards approved renewables training centres.
Paul's background gives him a deep understanding of the routes many engineers are taking to embrace the future and renewable technologies. He said: 'I was very impressed with the fantastic support I had from LCL Awards when I was setting up training centres, so when the opportunity to work for them came up, I leapt at it.
'My main role as Qualifications Manager will involve reviewing and updating the renewables qualifications. I will also be an External Verifier, supporting existing centres and helping new centres through their accreditation process. Having done this twice, I have first-hand knowledge of the guidance and assistance new centres require in going through the approval process to deliver LCL Awards' qualifications.'
Like Paul, Leon started out as a Gas Engineer, running his own gas business for twenty years before moving into building services training, where he's worked for the last eight years.
'Having been a trainer myself for many years, I'm enjoying being on the other side of the table, as it were, supporting training centres to deliver LCL Awards' excellent qualifications.
'I like LCL Awards' collaborative approach. The EQA's provide support and guidance rather than ruling with an iron rod! Having received many audits, I believe that LCL Awards' constructive way of working is very effective.'
'Building strong relationships with centres is key to the role. I really enjoy that side of things. I have responsibility for between forty and fifty centres and although the process I work through is the same each time, because each centre is unique, there are different challenges and requirements to deal with every day. I enjoy the variety.'
