Powered by cheese- a new whey found to fuel US plant

Little Miss Moffat is not the only one making use of whey, for this by- product, created at a Swiss cheese factory is being turned into a biogas to power the plant.
The food waste left over from cheese processing is proving to be as useful as the finished product at the Fairview Swiss cheese plant in Pennsylvania.

Owned by John Koller & Son, the plant will soon be powered partially from biogas.

The $2.2m project involves the construction of an anaerobic digester, that will use cheese whey from the plant and cone batter waste from the Joy Cone Co. to make 40m cubic feet of biogas annually - the equivalent of 28m cubic feet of natural gas.

The biogas, through use of the plant's boiler, will produce steam and electricity to fuel cheese processing at the site, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
